Isle of Wight Randonnee 2015

Not a bad day in the saddle...

A few months ago I heard about an interesting cycling sportive event – the Isle of Wight Randonee – an annual free to enter bike ride around the island of either 50k or 100k. I’ve never cycled on the Isle of Wight before but I heard it’s a little hilly, and on a clear day when walking along the promenade close to home I can see it far in the distance towering above the area around Selsey.

I’m starting to build up my cycling a little bit as of late although my longest ride since September was 45 miles about three weeks ago. Riding 60 odd miles felt like it would be fine.

Of course, I had to get to the Island first. After my car decided to die on me two and a half years ago I’m trying to be a little more self sufficient. Sharon offered to give me a lift to Portsmouth to catch the ferry but I thought that if I cycled to Portsmouth I’d get a decent ride in of around 90 miles or so. The ‘warm-up’ to the island would certainly wake me up!

In fact come the morning of the ride I was more woken up by the rain! The forecast wasn’t looking good for the morning and to be fair it didn’t seem *that* bad when I left home just before 6am. It was drizzling a little bit. Well, two miles in this turned into rain and that pretty much continued all the way to Portsmouth. I was soaked. It was lovely to see Marcus and some of the gang from Bognor parkrun say hello to me from the warmth and dry of a car as they drove past. Cheers!

Shortly after Bosham I saw some cyclists up ahead of me. A group of people cycling at 6:30am in the pouring rain made me assume that they were doing the same as myself and cycling to Portsmouth. They were. It was a small group from Bognor Regis Cycling Club and I said hello and cycled with them to the ferry terminal.

I arrived at about 7:45am and my ferry was booked for 8:15. Perfect. I’d booked the fast (25-ish minutes) boat from Portsmouth to Ryde Pier. The ferry had very few people on it (most seemed to be on the larger car ferry) and about 20 bikes at most. After ringing my gloves out of rain water and a bite to eat I tried to warm up in the dry ferry.

Starting at Ryde Pier was lovely. It’s a really impressive pier about half a mile long with beautiful smooth wooden boards to cycle along as you head to land. These boards were slippery like ice in the pouring rain so I had to be really careful.  Yes, it was still pouring with rain.  What joy.

It was about a four mile ride (although I got confused and rode an extra mile or so) to the first checkpoint of the ride in Wooton (you can start and finish at any checkpoint – this was just the closest one to where I arrived on the island).  Here you sign-in, collect a small ‘check card’ and prepare to get it stamped at each checkpoint round the island.

Today would be a long day in the saddle and I had to treat it that way. Ride slowly and well within myself – this would be the only way to get to the finish in one piece. The route changes direction each year (clockwise/anti-clockwise) and this was a clockwise year. I had the route downloaded onto my bike GPS so in addition to the excellent fixed ’round the island’ signposts it was nice to have an idea of what was coming up ahead.

Shortly after setting off on the official route (I’d ridden about 30 miles already) I saw a couple of people wearing ‘Stragglist’ cycling tops. These are folk from The Stragglers running club close to where we used to live in West London and I had a chat to them for a couple of miles. I was on the lookout for Ann and Ray from Bushy parkrun who I was told were a little way up the road.

Getting close to the next checkpoint near Bembridge I saw Ann. I said hello, we blew a few kisses (!) and I headed on to the checkpoint. Just as I was arriving the Bognor parkrun mob (about 10 of them) had just left. I hoped to catch them up shortly as all I needed to do was get my card stamped. Well, I had a chat with Ray (from Bushy parkrun) who was there, ended up buying a lovely sandwich and some chocolate. I then saw Marcus and Jo from Bognor parkrun who’d had an eventful start to their day due to a few navigation issues!

A few miles up the road I caught up with the Bognor gang and stopped to have a chat at the top of a small climb. They were in good spirits and for a number of good reasons had planned to do the shorter 50k route and have a nice pub lunch post-ride. One of the ladies, Benita, recently broke her leg and has only just come out of a six-week cast so for her to be even out on her bike was awesome if you ask me.

The weather was getting better with regards to rainfall – although it didn’t make much difference as I was soaking wet and every time I stood up on the pedals (for example to get up a small incline) I’d feel the water rush to the front of my shoes. Lovely!

When the rain went the mist and fog arrived. I was glad of having bike lights with me, not necessarily to help me, but to help others see me. It was really thick in places with say 30-50m visibility at most.

It was a shame that it was so foggy as there’s some beautiful views to be had from the island. This does mean I’ll have to come back I guess and do it again as the scenery didn’t quite deliver today. The hills were there though! Riding the island would be excellent training for something like Ironman UK or Wales where there’s lots of short sharp climbs, twists and turns.  This is my kind of terrain – although weighing a stone heavier than I was a few months ago made it tougher.

I was looking forward to getting to the westernmost point of the island, close to Freshwater. The wind would then be generally be a tailwind for the trip back to cowes and I was looking forward to that! My quads were aching and the ride was certainly taking it out of me a bit. I kept eating, drinking and moving forwards in the direction of the next checkpoint.

Before getting to Yarmouth the official route takes you on a compacted gravel cycle track for a couple of miles or so. I could have ridden a slightly longer route on the road but chose to follow the masses and took this slightly shorter route.

This past week I’d changed the wheels on my road bike and I had my really tough Continental GP 4 Season tyres which got me round and over the Rocky Mountains in Canada last year. I’ve had great experience with these tyres and with the weather like it was today I really didn’t want to be fixing a mechanical at the side of the road.

Many many people did have problems though – pretty much every couple of miles you’d see someone at the side of the road fixing a puncture. How frustrating.

I had a few little chats with people en-route. Sometimes there would be groups of people close by and then other times you’re pretty much on your own. It was never too busy (there were a little under 2,000 people on the ride today).

As we headed towards Cowes I could feel my right knee aching a bit. Not too far to go. Not too far. We all stopped and waited for a few minutes at the Cowes ‘chain link’ ferry and then got taken across to the other side where there was another checkpoint. This is where many people finished their ride as it was right by the ferry terminal for Southampton. Myself and a few others had a few more miles to go.

Up a hill, down a hill, up a hill…. and before long I was back at Wooton. I got the final stamp on my card, was given a certificate and bought a little badge from the lovely people who had given up their day to look after us cyclists.

It was a satisfying little pedal back to Ryde pier (which was dry at this point as the sun had come out) and I got to the ferry with about 30 minutes to spare. A hot drink and some food was just what was needed as I relaxed and waited for the ferry.

I’d ridden about 103 miles by this point (about 7 and a half hours of actual riding – only five hours more than my longest ride in the past seven months!). My right knee was really aching (makes a difference from my left ankle which is stopping me from doing any proper running at present) and I was about 26 or so miles from home. Being sensible (for a change) I jumped on a train at Portsmouth Harbour station (which is literally 30 seconds walk from the ferry terminal). This took me to Barnham and I rode the final four miles home.

A warm shower followed by a pub dinner, a few pints of cider and a walk home along the promenade. A long but very satisfying day.

If I had to describe the IOW Randonnee I’d say it is a pleasant but tough ride mostly on quiet lanes in a beautiful part of the country. I’ll do it again, that’s for sure.

    Hi David great write up, It was nice to meet you a fellow madman riding to the ferry port on Sunday in such wet and windy weather, like yourself the weather didn’t spoil our day either [I think I can speak for all my team mates from Bognor regis cc], we had a great and well deserved pub lunch at half way then raced back to Cowes with the wind behind us at speeds up to 32 mph in places and a little faster going down hill, we took it a bit easier on the way back to Fishbourne where got the ferry back to Portsmouth and a nice easy ride back home.
    As you live local to Bognor you should come along and join us on some of our rides, I think you would find our club a friendly and social club.

    I was exhausted reading this but hope your knee gets better soon. You really are “wonder man” and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a successful ironman in Hawaii in the autumn.
