Ironman Hawaii 2013

In August 2013 David qualified at Ironman UK for the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Here are all the blog posts relating to this race from the build and and through to day to day life at the home of Ironman with the most recent ones listed first.

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 28 – Ironman… what Ironman?

20131010-6029

After missing Mondays sunrise I was up and sat outside at 5:45am. I do wonder what kind of holiday this is when I’m up and out of bed over an hour earlier than I do when I’m back in England on a work day! There must be something wrong with me. First thing was to get Mondays blog finished off.  We then relaxed a little, had a bite to eat and headed out of the door and drove the three

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 27 – Cankles

20131014-4321

Monday morning.  I missed the sunrise. Dammit. I missed the sunrise. It was shortly after 7 when I opened my eyes. My legs ache (not as much as if I had run a standalone marathon really hard) but my feet, oh my feet. Well… my left foot. It’s strange to be writing about my hurting feet when I’ve not yet written my race report and said why/how I think they’re hurting. Very briefly I have a couple of little blisters

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 26 – Back to the Ironman store!

Ironman World Champions 2013

I know you all want to read my race report from Saturday’s Ironman World Championship. (yes, the World Championship) but I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait a few more days for it. I’ve got three long airplane flights in a few days time so I’ll be working on it during the flights. You got a brief posting for Saturday anyway with a photo so that will have to do for right now. The thing is, I’ve now got

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 25 – Race Day – Short but oh so sweet

20131012-finish

It’s 6:30am on Sunday and I just wanted to share this photo with you that I took yesterday evening.  I finished the race, it was tough, it was amazing, I was immensily proud of how I did all things considering and I have a huge medal that’s going to make me look like Mr T from the A-Team when I go through the airport in a few days time. I had a great swim, my legs just weren’t feeling it

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 24 – Race Week Friday – Good luck messages, how to watch online and predictions

20131011-4311

This is the second post for Friday and one I’ve been looking forward to writing – although it won’t be very long. Over the past few weeks I’ve had so many messages of good luck from people, from the party that was thrown a few days before I left London through to a constant stream of posts on Facebook, Twitter, comments on this blog, text messages and emails. It’s been overwhelming. I’ve replied to some but not all messages and

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 24 – Race Week Friday – Bike racking

20131011-6256

The Ironman World Championship race is tomorrow, Saturday. Yes, tomorrow. Less than 24 hours away. Actually, I’m writing this at 5:30pm on Friday, so in 12 hours time I’ll probably be crapping myself somewhere in the transition area on the pier in Kailua-Kona! I cannot wait! But first we have Friday to get through. I could have had a lie-in this morning but seeing as though I’ve been up and out of bed before six in the morning every day

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 23 – Race Week Thursday – Check your heart rate

20131010-6000

The Ironman World Championship on Saturday is a very important event. 8am Thursday morning in Kona is a sporting event that holds almost as much stature – The Underpants Run. I’ve heard about it, I’ve read about it, I’ve seen pictures of it, now I’m in Kona I have to do it surely! This is an abridged description of the event from the underpantsrun.org website… IF IT’S THURSDAY IN KONA, IT’S THE UNDERPANTS RUN! The tradition continues into it’s 16th

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 22 – Race Week Wednesday – Are you Sebastian?

20131009-4288

I was looking forward to Wednesday morning as Tom Williams from the UK had arrived in town late yesterday evening. Sharon and I know Tom really well and I enjoyed reading his blog a few years ago during his ‘Ironman years.’ When I first met him I felt I knew him already from reading his blog. We also met up with Ian Osbourne who’s the editor of Triathlete Europe magazine. This is the finest of the triathlon magazines in the
