Ironman Hawaii 2013

In August 2013 David qualified at Ironman UK for the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Here are all the blog posts relating to this race from the build and and through to day to day life at the home of Ironman with the most recent ones listed first.

Kona Diaries 2013 – Race Day – Post Race

20131013-0732

This is the fifth and final one of a number of posts describing my day at the 2013 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Previous parts are pre-race, swim, bike and run.  There’s also over 30 other daily blog posts from Kona also available to view as part of the Kona Diaries 2013. The last post finished with the following “Stay tuned for another post where I tell you what happened between 5:30pm and midnight on race day…” – well, it’s about time I

This is the fourth of a number of posts describing my day at the 2013 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Previous parts are pre-race, swim and the bike.  There’s also over 30 other daily blog posts from Kona also available to view as part of the Kona Diaries 2013. I wasn’t expecting a great run to be honest given my complete lack of runs over 8.5 miles since Ironman UK at the start of August. The good thing though was that I’d

Kona Diaries 2013 – Race Day – Bike

Bike shoes are undone and I'm about to take my feet out before returning to transition.

This is the third of a number of posts describing my day at the 2013 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  Previous parts are pre-race and the swim. As I got onto my bike the first thing you do is head up a little incline and then turn left onto the Kuakini Highway. The turn is called ‘hot corner’ – riders can be seen/supported three times from here early on in the bike course so it was rammed with spectators.

Kona Diaries 2013 – Race Day – Swim

This is the second of a number of posts describing my day at the 2013 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.  The previous part (pre-race) can be found here. I quickly pressed start on my watch and started swimming. I had expected a good old fashioned bun-fight in the swim but it hadn’t materialised (yet). It was busy, don’t get me wrong. It was difficult to find any free space. When you think you have space it suddenly closes in

Kona Diaries 2013 – Race Day – Pre-Race

20131012-3838

This is the first of a number of posts describing my day at the 2013 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I slept fairly well for the night before the biggest race of my life. Perhaps it was because the pressure is off – I’m unfortunately nowhere near full fitness at the moment because of the problems I’ve had with my left foot (a separate post will follow with a bit more detail as to the training that got me

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 31 – Please don’t make me leave, please don’t…

20131018-7358

We watched our final Kona sunrise this morning from a very familiar spot. As per usual we saw a few fishing boats and canoes out on the ocean and the waves as usual crashing onto the rocks where the water meets the lava at the edge of our condo block. It really is a beautiful place. I don’t think I’ve posted a photo of our morning view on the blog yet so before I forget, this is what we would

The second to last sunrise in Hawaii was watched as usual from the lanai at the condo we’re staying at. I’ve been sleeping pretty well the last few days, although not getting enough of it – that’s the problem if you go to sleep at 11pm and have the alarm set for 5:45am I guess. This morning we wanted to go into town and have a swim from the pier (well, Dig Me Beach – they’re both pretty much the

Kona Diaries 2013 – Day 29 – Watch out for falling… geckos!

20131016-7286

Today, Wednesday, was the first day in a while that we’d not seen any of our friends who are out here – partly as they’ve all pretty much gone home now. We’ve got a couple more days before we head to our ‘real’ home back in England so now that the race is out of the way we went on a bit of a road trip up to the north of the island. From Kona we headed north on Highway
